34"H Expandable Free-standing Steel Mesh Pet Gate is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 942.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Pet Gate Wonderful product, high quality and stylish. Keeps my pets off the carpet and the bronze finish blends nicely with the decor. This is the fourth gate of this type I have bought from Frontgate for myself and family members; they are great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect in every way! I was looking for a gate to contain our cats, so it needed to be higher than most I'd seen. I also wanted a compliment to our Tuscan-style home. This gate is both beautiful and functional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Gate! After years of having our dachshunds pull down, chew up, and jump over traditional dog gates, we decided to try to find something more permanent and sturdy, but still attractive. We looked into having a custom gate built, but found it to be pretty pricey. However, most metal gates we found were in widths that would not even come close to our doorway's measurements. Our doorframe is 40.75" across, so we were initially sad to think that this gate would be barely too small, but we decided to try to find a solution, and we're so glad we took a chance! This gate is even more beautiful in person and very solid - the website pictures truly don't do it justice. We ended up building 2 columns for each side out of framing studs, trimmed them out to fill the gaps and still be a sturdy brace to support the gate, and painted them to match the other trim in our home. In the end, they make the gate look even more interesting, and we couldn't be happier! Our only regret is that this site doesn't have an option to share photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Gate!!!!!!!!!!!! This was the best decision I ever made. I run a small dog business out of my home. I have been through countless wooden gates that cost just as much if not more and they only lastest for short periods of time with the doggie crew that I can have in my care at one time. Sturdy very attractive looking and built to last. The walk through door on the gate was exactly what I was looking for in a pet gate plus durability to last. If I could wish for one thing is that they made one just as tall with a walk through door that would fit a 36" opening like into a small hallway or bedroom doorway to block off. They offer something similar but not with the door on it. This one I have is for about a 54 to 58" opening and works great! You will not regret the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real quality that exceeds expectations We bought two of these pet gates - the single door size and the bigger one for a double French door. Both are finely crafted with a very nice bronze finish. The decorative detail is impressive. They really look handcrafted. They were very easy to assemble and adjust to fit. They are sturdy. It's not often that a product exceeds expectations so nicely. We are proud to have these gates in our house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pet gate is functional yet elegant My wife thought our 20 month Golden could not be fully trusted to keep out of mischief when we were out for a few hours. The crate seemed to be limiting. We wanted to sequester her to half of our foyer which we did with this beautiful gate. The opening is 63 inches. The gate is expandable to 70 inches. I was not looking for anything that would be permanently mounted to the wall and this free standing gate was the perfect solution. It is functional and cannot be toppled over by a hyper golden who weighs 65 pounds. The gate has a swinging door as well. The quality is better than you would expect for the price. I highly recommend it. The catalog photo is not a perfect representation of the color . I would say it is more black with bronze highlights than a bronze color overall. I would have preferred a more bronze color but none the less very happy with its decorative qualities in our home.

How well does the gate fold up when it needs to be stored?

Asked by: dogsrgreat
It does not fold but very easy to assemble like 5 to 10 min max so you could just take it apart but it would still be big but would store flat then.

How does the gate attach to the wall or is this a freestanding piece heavy enough to withstand the force if a do jumping on it?

Would like some further safety info
Asked by: DRRD
This gate is free standing as shown on the picture. It's pretty sturdy but then again, we don't have a dog that tries to jump over it. The gate can be reinforced to the wall with a piece of wood but I think it would have to be a pretty big dog to knock it over. Hopefully that helps.

I want to use this at base of stairs to keep my older Weimaraner from going up, he's 85 lb. and my floors are marble. Will this work? Will it slide?

Asked by: Aeschultz
The gate has rubber foot pads under steel legs. Doesn't slide easily. Doesn't knock over easily, either. Many large dogs are wise enough to try to jump over, push or pull over. Yours may be that smart too.

can it be adjusted to lower width?

I have an opening that is 53 inches. Is there a way to configure it to be less than 55 inches? I need the taller gate (34") vs. the 22 inch to keep our 80 lb. golden retriever out of the living room, but the opening to that room is 53".
Asked by: bayareamom
No. This is a rigid construction that only comes in a few pieces. The long piece overlaps the gate frame and screw holes are on 2-inch centers holding them together. As described below, this is a fixed limitation so if you need something more narrow you need a different product. "Expands in 2" increments from 55" to 68-1/2" wide". Since it is free-standing, you could consider just placing it just beyond your opening, but a strong 80-lb dog could feasibly just shove the entire gate frame until they can go around it. Might need to put weights on the feet to prevent this.

Keep door open when not using it. Only nerd it closed when I'm not at home. Thank you

We keep the door open by placing a weight in front of it, whenever we're letting our fur kids wander, which isn't often.

How wide are the slats on the sides? I have a 2 pound escape artist and need small slats.

Asked by: Squirrelfriend
The main bars are only 1/2" apart, so it would just depend how far out the tension screws need to be to fit your opening. That would likely be the widest gap.

What width opening does this fit?

The description on the web page states "Easily installs in doorways that are 33.5"-37.5" wide", but the assembly instructions state "This product fits opening from 32.5''to 36.5''wide.Do not place the product outside this range." My opening is 37.0" wide.
Asked by: Elleanor
Our doorway is 40.75" wide. We built 2 columns our of framing studs trimmed with moulding and painted to match the other trim on our house. These allowed for a solid installation and helped full the gaps on the sides, because we have small dogs that are escape artists, plus they made the already beautiful gate look even more custom. Wish the website had an option to post photos...sorry!

Is it possible to purchase expand

Is it possible to purchase additional side piece to attach to expand to 45 inches wide. Would it work if I bought 2 gates and used pieces from 2nd one? Thank you Ilene
Asked by: iklein1
There are no side pieces available, and it's really almost all one piece, vs. needing assembly, so there wouldn't be an easy way to take anything off of a 2nd one - it's far too sturdy! However, our doorway is 40.75" wide. We built 2 columns our of framing studs trimmed with moulding and painted to match the other trim on our house. Side Panel Width

How wide are the side panels? I see that the sides are 17 3/4 deep, but I believe that is the length of the foot, not the width of the panel.

Can this gate be used outdoors as well?

Asked by: MissDaisy
If you live out west where it is dry (So Cal, Nev, Arizona), you might be ok (it might get too hot in the direct sun though!), otherwise I would think the metal would corrode eventually from the moisture.

How does this gate latch? Does it have a door that people can walk through, and is it spring loaded?

Asked by: puppykitty
This gate has no latch and no door. We have it placed in the living room entrance as the dogs are not allowed in there at all. You can step over it easily. If you need a gate with an access door you would have to choose something else. But for a exclusive no entry room this is great. However it is light enough that you can pick it up and set it aside

Can this gate be used on stairs

I have several cats and I want to keep them from going upstairs in my home.
Asked by: Chloe4631
The gate has to be mounted correctly before the latch will stay closed. If you can create enough tension using a stair rung and the wall, (or whatever you will be attaching it to) then I think it would be perfect!

Gaps on the side of extended gate?

My doorway is 36 inches wide. I have seen previous reviewers mention that when gate is fully extended, there is room on either side for cats to squeeze through. How much space can I expect on the sides if the gate is extended to fit my 36 inch doorway? With many pet gates I've found that they won't fit odd length openings, and I'm very keen on this one. However I'm worried it won't fit since there isn't any information listed on how it expands. Will this fit a 42" doorway? Thank you!

Can the cat door be secured so a dog cannot push it open?

Asked by: AussieMom
I was thinking of using the twist tie that came with the gate to secure the cat door. Twist and cut short on the outside to prevent pet scrathes... I think my cat might learn to play with the lever and simply lift it up and don't trust just that latch. Give that a try!

How secure is the latching mechanism?

Can you tell me where the latch is located, and how it works? My 18 lb French bulldog/pug mix has escaped from another pen I have that has a latching mechanism that opens by lightly lifting and pushing or pulling the gate door.
Asked by: avalonlight
We have 4 dachshunds that are also escape artists. The main latch is a square pin that slides sideways into a square channel and is at the very top corner of the door out of their reach The pin is spring loaded, so it pops back when released vs. staying open. Also, the door has self-closing hinges, so it closes itself, and the latch pin has an angled end, so it drops into place and automatically latches. The latch on the little "cat" door is a u-shaped piece that swings up off of a pin, but it's on the outside of the gate, so the dogs can't get to it.
