34"H Expandable Free-standing Steel Mesh Pet Gate 4.6 5 448 469
Great Purchase!!! Wonderful purchase! Easy to set up, well constructed, fits well with decor. Just beautiful! September 18, 2013
No More Rushing Home! Some happy to give Sophie the freedom to move around and not be in a kennel/box all day! I'm guilt-free and not having to rush home every day. Worth every penny! September 17, 2013
Great Find! The gate is very attractive and sturdy, and has done a great job of keeping our 5 dogs in their own space. September 13, 2013
Great looking and functional gate! Best looking pet gate out there!! Beautiful piece of furniture even if you don't have pets!!! September 12, 2013
Love the doggie gate It is beautiful...goes well with my decor! My husband wasnt sure about having gates up everywhere for the new family addition we adopted....however when he saw the gates he was like WOW those look great! We actually ordered the 3 different styles that go together...and we are very pleased for the $ spent! September 6, 2013
Very happy Shipping took a very long time but it was worth the wait. We realized how uneven our floors were when the gate wouldn't line up and close properly. We landed up screwing the gate to the walls to even it out. Everyone comments on how nice the gate is... sturdy (even more sturdy screwed to the walls) and decorative. September 3, 2013
Beautiful & Functional We ordered the expanding pet gate for a 64 inch doorway in preparation for a new puppy. Our old gate was by admission ugly and hard to handle; however, with such a large opening our options have always been limited. I was thrilled to find such a stylish, affordable expandable gate. It was easy to assemble and the swinging door is so handy. It arrived well packed with no damage. My current dog is 20 lbs but doesn't jump on the gate, so when the new puppy arrives the gate will get the test for being sturdy. So far we are very pleased with our purchase. August 27, 2013
Expandable Mesh Pet Gate We needed a reliable and easy to live with solution to keeping our three pets out of our living room. Our doorway is 61inches wide and all the pet gates we found at our local pet stores were either too narrow, ugly, or flimsy. We found this nice looking, metal, adjustable pet gate at Frontgate and it looked like an ideal solution and the price was good too. The gate came in a large, heavy box that I know must have been fun for the delivery person to carry up to our door. It took about 15 minutes to unbox the gate and set it up which required attaching 6 allen bolts with the included allen wrench. It was really easy. The gate was easily adjusted for the width of our doorway. The gate has a spring-loaded "door" that springs closed upon entering and leaving the room. There is a latch to keep persistent critters from pushing the gate open. The gate is also tall enough so that our two cats cannot leap over it. This pet gate is not only very sturdy and nice looking, it is easy to use and does the job perfectly. I would recommend it to any one who wants to get their rooms back from their pets!!! The nice finish on the gate makes it attractive and will surely be durable. A very nice product!! August 13, 2013
Excellent Pet Gate We have been looking for a free standing gate that our dogs are unable to push around or move themselves and we believe this is the answer to our needs. Other pet gates we've owned were not as durable and our dog (who is smarter then the average mutt) discovered how to move it making it perform poorly. One of our dogs actually chewed through the mesh the gate was made of and that required us to place chairs in front of the gate to keep them in the kitchen. We've had this gate for over a month now and everyday when we get home, the dogs are all where we left them and we did not find any surprises waiting for us to clean up. This is exactly what we were looking for. August 11, 2013
Expanding Dod Gate nice gate, works well, nice appearance, very reasonable price for how big it is. August 9, 2013
Awesome gate Love this gate. It is classy, very sturdy, made well and easy to put together. August 9, 2013
Great Product! This gate works perfectly. We have an 85 Lb dog and a 35 Lb dog and the gate works well for both of them. It is very stable and was easy to install ( free standing). August 9, 2013
Most gorgeous pet gate ever! This puts all other pet gates to shame, and I've had them all. This is a lovely piece of furniture like a well-designed fireplace grate. Love the self-closing feature too. Easy to assemble. Very luxurious. July 26, 2013
Great dog gate This looks beautiful, but even better, functions very well. I have 4 dogs, ranging in size from 6-60 pounds. This works great for all of them. July 16, 2013
34"H Expandable Freestanding Steel Mesh Pet Gate Excellent quality! Looks very beautiful! Would highly recommend. We have two Great Danes (much taller than the gate) and we have no problems! Thanks for an elegant gate that does its job. July 15, 2013
sturdy and nice looking Very functional, I especially appreciate the screws that keep the side wings from folding and collapsing. I have one dog that finds no obstacle too high to jump, and can jump this, but because it is so sturdy, it stays upright with no harm done! July 13, 2013
Great dog gate! I work with a dog rescue so I'm always looking for products that will make my life easier. This gate is wonderful and exceeding my expectations. The quality is better than anything I've ever seen. It's appropriately heavy too so it's not easy for the dogs to move. And - it's pretty! Thanks Frontgate for offering such a great product. July 13, 2013
Quality at a very affordable price! When this gate arrived, it far exceeded my expectations! For the price I was not expecting it to be as heavy and well-made ... and it does not look bad in my home at all. I also like the fact that my dogs can see through it and it is heavy enough they cannot knock it down. Also love the details -- cushioned so it does not mar my moldings or door frame. Thank you Frontgate! You never disappoint! June 3, 2013
Loved the pet gate We really love the pet gate that we purchased. We ordered another one to block another part of the house. Already have had compliments on how beautiful it is. Would definitely recommend this product. May 23, 2013
love it! Shipped quickly. Easy set-up. Looks beautiful and works great! My daughter bought several for her dogs and they worked so well for her that I bought one also. I'm thoroughly satisfied and highly reccomend it. May 22, 2013
Love this Gate Gate was shipped out, and recieved on time.. It is beautiful, heavy, and just make the transition between my rooms just great. Opens and closes the best. I have already ordered 2 more of the higher tension gates to match.. I am totally happy with this company, A gate above May 22, 2013
Great design The heavy gauge construction of this gate was such an improvement over the wooden gate we had before. We use this gate to separate two 6 lb Pappillons from our 80 lb Lab at night time. This gate is heavy enough that it dissuades the Lab from easily pushing it aside and accessing areas we don't want her in. It is beautifully constructed and assembles in 5 minutes. It arrived perfectly packaged without the slightest scratch or blemish. The door only opens one way, but that was not a real problem for us. Overall we are very impressed!! May 22, 2013
Beautiful gate! We bought this gate to replace an old outdated looking one that we have had for years. We needed a gate to keep our dogs out of the living room and other parts of the house. This gate looks beautiful and fits in nicely with our décor. It is sturdy and easy to open. We love it! May 22, 2013
free standing dog gate I live in England and could not get anything like this here. This gate is great, i can get to my front door without the rest of the family getting out ! I have had many comments about the gate from other people who say it is really nice ! May 18, 2013
Beautiful and Functional I love this gate. It is so versatile and functional, as well as looks lovely. Easy to put together. Only problem I am having is that it seems to rock a bit, so I had to put something under the legs to even it out. That could be due to my floor not being exactly level where it is situated! I would totally recommend it to anyone! :-) April 22, 2013
34" Expandable Freestanding Pet Gate Very impressed with quality. My cats have managed to push or knock down every other gate. This one they can't jump over or move. Also, it looks nice where we have it so very pleased with our decision to get this. April 16, 2013
Pet Gate The pet gate is great. Everyone that sees it and walks through it thinks it is great. Not one negative comment. April 16, 2013
Pet Gate Love it. Just what I was looking for it looks great! April 16, 2013
Great Gate I bought this gate for an unusual spot and it has worked very well. I am using it to block our Australian Shepherd puppy from getting into the living room from the kitchen and needed a gate that could fit diagonally between a corner of the living room and the corner of the kitchen also blocking the stairs. We were able to make one side of the gate stay at a fixed 90 degree angle, while the other side has to lay pretty flat against a wall by our back door. The puppy is very energetic and can definitely rattle the gate, but can't knock it over or jump over it. It also looks great and matches our decor. I am planning on buying another smaller matching gate to replace a plastic baby gate that we have in our hallway. I highly recommend the gate for looks and durability. April 11, 2013
Great looking Pet Gate Finally, a great looking pet gate that doesn't require installation, holes in walls, etc. Was able to put this together with the help of my teenage son with mild frustration. It is a bit weighty and bulky to work with during assembly which caused much of the frustration. This gate is located by a rarely used room, so the need to use the door is not a frequent one. The gate looks great, stands on its own and looks like a deliberate part of the decor rather than an eyesore. Love it! April 9, 2013

gate latch

is the gate latch easy to operate with your hands full? does it lock top and bottom? And does the latch operate both or do you have to stoop down to unlatch the bottom? Is the gate easy to scoot if the dog tries to push it? Our little Yorkie often moves the gate we have now, so we are looking for a heavier one.

Answer:
We have found the latch quite easy to work, and I have had my hands full a time or two. There is only a top latch, but it has proved to be all that is needed. We secured the gate with screws, so I cannot accurately answer your question of scooting. I can tell you the gate is quite heavy.

Answer:
You probably do need one hand to open the gate. It is a sliding mechanism at the top only (no bottom latch). Once it is open, you can push through it with hands full and it swings back by itself to shut.

Answer:
There is only a latch up top and unless you push the latch or slam it - it stays slightly open. We prefer that as we have our gate to block up staircase and since we go up and down it a lot - it helps that it doesn't latch unless we want it too. Our dog can't get through it when it's not latched - as it stays closed well enough but this way you can just use your leg to open it while you may have items in your hands.

Answer:
The gate does require a free hand to operate. It has a good weight to it so two hands are better. The lock is only on the top of the gate. I have two welsh corgis and they are not able to move it. Again, it has good weight to it.

Answer:
Yes it is easy. I have an 8 week Golden and can carry him in one hand and pull the latch open with the other. The latch is only at the top and you don't need to stoop down or anything to undo it. The door swings back on it's own as well and latches. At this point we feel it is pretty sturdy because of the horizontal legs on on both sides and we haven't even connected all the pieces yet.

Answer:
Yes, it is easy to operate. It has one sliding lock on the top where you can reach down without bending (and I am 6'5"). The gate is heavy and hard to move, but the sides are angled and can be moved by the dog so he can wedge himself through if you don't anchor the sides firmly against the wall. But it is plenty heavy enough for Yorkies. We have 2.

Answer:
The gate is nice and heavy and our dog hasn't been able to move it, though to be fair, she hasn't tried very hard. It latches only at the top and requires just a finger to slide the bolt out. If you're coming from the other direction, however, you have to reach over the gate. When we come down the stairs, it's a little awkward to bend over and reach the latch. It closes easily behind you.

Answer:
The gate latches at the top only. It is very easy to open even with stuff in your hands. It is a slide type latch. This is a heavy metal gate so your Yorkie will not be able to push it open at the bottom. I have a Yorkie also. He is a jumper and climber. He can not jump over this gate or climb it. This gate is heavy so your dog will not be able to push it out of the way. It also has rubber on the bottom so it does not slide on hard wood floors easily. Also the door closes automaticlly and latches so you don't have to worry about your Yorkie pushing it open if you forget to latch it.

Answer:
I find the latch very easy to open- there is only one latch at the top of the gate so no stooping required. I doubt that a Yorkie will be capable of moving this gate. It is very sturdy metal construction. We have a lab/basset hound mix puppy who currently weighs about 25 lbs.

Answer:
No, the gate cannot go on the other side. The holes to connect the pieces of the gate make it so that you cannot change the side of the gate. The only way you can get the door on the right is to face the gate the opposite way that's in the picture.

No. You would have to turn the whole gate around to get the door on the Right side. Depending on your opening it could be done. The back side of the gate is not ugly. It is just not as finished as the front side.

Answer:
I would have to see your stairwell or at least know the dimensions but for the most part, this gate is just what it says it is "free standing" and it's quite sturdy. We have giant and large breed dogs (weigh 158, 110 and 85 lbs, respectively). Since the two larger dogs often "challenge" gates or simply barrel through them, we decided to turn this gate inward between our dining and living room. The gate opens "in" so they are unable to push on it - works like a charm. You'd have to be sure the gate expands past the opening at the top of your stairs but the opening between the two rooms in our house is 70" or almost 6 feet. the gate has a magnetic closure so it swings shut automatically if you let it go and latches. Hope this helps. (The gate is lovely and quite well made). Denise in Land O' Lakes

Answer:
If using it for a pet it should be fine, it is free standing and very sturdy. Not sure I would use it for a child.

Answer:
It is pretty sturdy, and it has the stand to balance it, but I don't know if someone can tip it down the stairs.

Answer:
I would NOT use at the top of stairs! It may fall! Not a suction or screw in type and could tip over.

Answer:
We installed ours on the top of some stairs and to make it very stable, I cut two blocks of wood (4" X 4" X 7" L) to slide under the legs and this made the fully opened gate extremely strong. I stained them brown to match the stairs and they are almost invisible beneath the metal legs. Even opening and closing the door is easier and can be done with one hand now.

The description states that the opening is 55" wide, so I am concerned about whether or not it could adjust smaller.

Answer:
We appreciate your interest in this item. Unfortunately, the smallest size this gate can be adjusted to is 55". We do offer our 22"H Free-standing Mesh Pet Gate Barrier (item 42958) in two different size options, one of which adjusts between 40" - 70". We apologize for any inconvenience.

Answer:
The doorway where we placed the gate is less than 55 inches. We just put the side panels up against the wall on each side. The results were similar to one of the pictures on Frontgate. It shows the gate panels extended out from the doorway. It works and looks great.

Answer:
If there is wall on either or both sides of your opening, you can simply put it overlapping the doorway and the sides will come in to your wall. Otherwise, the shortest it assembles is 54 1/2"

Answer:
No. Just set it on one side of the door opening. It will be extend slightly over each side of the doorway, but will be side pieces will be flush against the wall. Look at the photo and just imagine the gate extended 3" wider on each side.

Answer:
It will not be able to fit an opening 48" wide. I tested mine to see if I could make it fit, and it would not.
