34"H Expandable Free-standing Steel Mesh Pet Gate 4.6 5 422 441
Gates Very pleased with this purchase. Went together without difficulties. And the hounds are out of the living room. December 24, 2013
Beautiful gate It's so hard to find gates for wide openings that are attractive. Really nice, functional and works well with our contemporary decor. Easy to assemble. December 16, 2013
Great find! ***** I'd been looking for a gate that would serve this purpose but also have eye appeal as it sits at our entry way. I needed exactly the dimensions given for large ( Bernese MT dogs) & this gate is not only very study, but almost elegant in appearance. People compliment about it as they come in & ask WHERE I found something so different than white or wood "Baby"gates. It looks like part of the decor & is VERY easy to assemble ( less than 10 minutes)& easy to go in & out. LOVE it! Would highly recommend it to anyone needing a gate to keep pets or babies,,,in /out~~~Thanks for a great product!! October 27, 2011
2nd purchase The gate looks ok. This is my 2nd purchase of this gate (first time purchase was nicer and seemed sturdier). My first purchase lasted approx. 2 two years then needed replacement. I have it in a very high traffic area in my home and it is used constantly. I would return and exchange this 2nd purchase though , as it is a bit wobbly and there are other minor issues, but I have bigger fish to fry. So I will keep it.....It's not a lifetime purchase. All in all, it's nicer than all other gates I have searched on the web and better than the alternative. The iron matches my decor. December 4, 2012
Great design The heavy gauge construction of this gate was such an improvement over the wooden gate we had before. We use this gate to separate two 6 lb Pappillons from our 80 lb Lab at night time. This gate is heavy enough that it dissuades the Lab from easily pushing it aside and accessing areas we don't want her in. It is beautifully constructed and assembles in 5 minutes. It arrived perfectly packaged without the slightest scratch or blemish. The door only opens one way, but that was not a real problem for us. Overall we are very impressed!! May 22, 2013
Best purchase ever! Fabulous- easy to assemble - looks great- stable and easy to use! December 22, 2013
Tasteful and functional A very elegant addition to our home. Our labs find it special to walk through the open gate. It increases the privilege to be in that area of our home! December 8, 2013
Beautiful solution to a dog problem This good-looking and easy to assemble dog gate has solved the problem of my 3 large dogs (2 labs, 1 bernese mountain dog) from "greeting" our guests at the door. It looks like it was custom made to fit the space, one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. Thanks! November 12, 2013
2 little screen defects. These are beautiful, quality gates that I am proud to have in my home. They look much better than baby gates. I like how they are free standing and very stable and also have an easy to open swinging gate. I have 2 gates. One had a patched hole in the screen, about 1 inch square, the other had a dent like a pole had poked it, about the size and shape of the end of your thumb. These are not major, but given the cost of the gates I would have expected them to be perfect. I am sure Frontgate would help me with the gates, but they were much to heavy and big to want to pack up. June 20, 2012
Pet Gate I really liked the 34"H Mesh Pet Gate for our living room. The Color of the mesh was also great match with our furniture. Now much more easier to manage my Doberman Pinscher. I definitely recommend this adjustable gate if you have a large breed dog. November 12, 2013
Great improvement Our kitchen doorway has an angled frame so spring-loaded dogs gates are constantly popping out of it. This gate was a welcomed relief from those. It adds ease and a bit more class to having a constant stream of rescues coming and going through our house. A couple negatives are the loud clatter it makes when the gate shuts and the fact that it only assembles with the door on the OPPOSITE side as pictured in the catalog. To reduce clatter (and make it easier to use), we completely removed the locking latch and inserted several felt chair pads throughout the unit. August 21, 2012
Pet Gate OUTSTANDING!!! I purchased a pet gate from you and OMG!!!! It is the best. It looks nice and works great. I have expense hard wood floors in part of my home and I wanted to keep my Westie Dog off of them because he was marking. This gate is fantastic!!! Thank you November 8, 2013
Dog fence The front gate dog metallic free standing fence is aesthetic and functional. It contains my Siberian husky (70 lbs) where she needs to be. At first she tried to push it away but the fence is solid and heavy enough to maintain its position. I am very pleased with my purchase. I was informed at all times of the shipment date. October 14, 2013
Very functional but beautiful gate This was an expensive purchase, but one that was well worth it. This is a very attractive gate that you won't mind having in your living room, but it is very effective in keeping your dogs off of your nice carpets and other stuff in your more formal rooms. It was fairly easy to assemble although the instructions could have had better and larger pictures. It fits nicely in an odd-shaped opening we have between rooms. We had to experiment awhile to find the right way to orient it to keep the dogs from pushing the ends around to squeeze through. September 13, 2012
Perfect Not only does the gate look great, but it was the perfect size and durable. December 3, 2013
Beautiful addition Once you determine how to assemble this gate it is a beautiful way to keep pets out of certain areas. Due to the very wide opening we had to block, this pet gate needed to be almost 70" wide. The pass-through door with automatic closure is especially convenient and allow easy access for two-legged visitors. The mesh design and scroll work are very nice and well detailed. Our pup can easily sit outside the gate and watch all that is going on inside the protected room. This is a beautiful and well made solution to a problem area. December 28, 2012
Gate Looks great, quality bad. overpriced for what I received. December 3, 2013
Nice, sturdy gate This is a nice, attractive gate! Easy to put together, also. My only wish is that it had a smaller pet door for my cats so they could come & go as they please while keeping my larger dog out. November 8, 2013
Damaged Product This pet gate was damaged when I received it. Part of the metal mesh was ripped/cut and there was a hole about the size of a quarter with rough metal edges towards the bottom. I only kept it because I have a new puppy and desperately needed a gate. We mended it, but it is now an eyesore and of course the puppy goes right to it and chews on the mended part. I am very disappointed that this obvious defect would pass through your inspection dept. I expected a quality product for the price and did not receive one. February 1, 2013
Just PERFECT! I LOVE this pet gate! Beautifully designed, STURDY, EASY to assemble & I'm horrible at assembling things. Adds touch of ELEGANCE to my dining & living room decor and BLENDS perfectly! My dogs are keep SAFELY on the other side and I have no fear of gate falling over or being destroyed by them either. EASY to clean & I can tell this gate will last a LONG TIME...unlike my past pet gates. I WILL buy more of this style (different sizes) for other parts of my house! Yes, price is on the high side; HOWEVER, SOOOOO WORTH IT! THANK YOU!!! August 6, 2012
Looks great! I was looking for a nice looking gate since I think they will be up for quite a while. I also needed three so didn't want to spend a fortune. I was a little nervous reading the reviews particularly the people that said the gates came damaged. I decided to take a chance because I knew Frontgate would take care of me if there was a problem. Well, the gates definately need to be packed better from the manufacturer. Fortunately, they all arrived ok and I didn't have to return any. They look great and work great. Highly recommended. November 23, 2011
Great looking Pet Gate Finally, a great looking pet gate that doesn't require installation, holes in walls, etc. Was able to put this together with the help of my teenage son with mild frustration. It is a bit weighty and bulky to work with during assembly which caused much of the frustration. This gate is located by a rarely used room, so the need to use the door is not a frequent one. The gate looks great, stands on its own and looks like a deliberate part of the decor rather than an eyesore. Love it! April 9, 2013
Love our Pet Gate I am so glad I waited for the Bronze Pet Gate with a door as we received it around the first week of July and it went together in about 15 minutes. It is great, looks great, and we have received lots of compliments on it. It looks and works just like the picture and has been a great improvement for the look of our entrance hall. Our dogs can not get to the door when the door bell rings and they seem to not have a problem with it. Saves me from haveing to try to step over or move a gate just to answer the door. LOVE IT LOVE IT. July 14, 2011
Perfect for the job We bought this gate to contain our dogs in our family room on occasion. It is beautiful and sturdy, albeit quite heavy for one person to move around. You have the option of using the hinges on the end pieces to make it so it will lay flat for storage, or you can use bolts to secure the ends perpendicularly to the gate, which makes it more sturdy. We went with using the bolts and when it's not in use, we place it on the hearth of our fireplace, and it looks like a fireplace screen. It definitely is serving it's purpose July 8, 2012
Was hoping for higher quality product,,,,, The gate is beautiful in appearance but has problems with detail work. Considered returning due to fit and finish. Paint is missing. Latch does not line up and gate will not stay closed. Gate is wobbly. Some of the welding is poorly done. Our dogs are quite small so we are able to keep them contained. A larger dog could easily push the gate open since the gate does not stay latched. We are repeat Frontgate customers and this is NOT the quality we are accustomed to getting from Frontgate. Would not recommend to a friend. October 18, 2011
Free Standing Steel Mesh Pet Gate The gate is very nice looking and an 'update' on most 'jail -type' looking pet gates. It would be helpful & convienent is the door was reversible November 4, 2013
So glad we ordered these gates The 34"H mesh pet gates are beautiful and of excellent quality. The assembly needed was very little and very simple. Because the gates expand, their placement is quite flexible. The door section opens and closes easily. These will greatly improve life in our house when all the "granddogs" come to visit!!! Our only criticism is that the shipping boxes are quite flimsy cardboard from China and we thought that it was a miracle the gates arrived in good condition. Don't know if this has been a problem for others. June 20, 2012
Gate Sturdy I recently purchased your gate and found it to be very sturdy. The self closing gate spring seems too tight and does make it more difficult to walk through. It certainly does the job but I expected the finish to be better quality for the price. I debated over returning it for this reason but decided to keep it anyway. It is shipped in a huge heavy box but requires little assembly. My delivery person asked what was in the box and I replied a dog gate. He looked at the huge box and said " How big are your dogs?" April 3, 2012
Nice gate but.... The gates are very solid and very attractive. However, this model does not have a walk-through gate. The catalog description is a little misleading in that the summary of details says walk-through gate. Only one model has the gate. Nevertheless at 22 inches high it is possible to step over. Does the job for my small dog - even with her jumping up she can't budge the gate. The width adjusts in fixed increments which may be smaller or larger than your doorway - wouldn't be an issue with the pressure gate though. January 20, 2012
Great Dog Gate This expandable mesh pet gate is just what we needed. We have as many as 3 dogs in the house at one time. Keeping them away from carpeted areas can be important if we plan to be gone for several hours. This gate does the job. It blocks a 66 in. opening leading into our family room. Our big dog (85 lbs,) has easily defeated other barriers we've tried, but this one has him stymied. It's also a very attractive complement to our traditional family room decor. Well worth the money. gate latch

is the gate latch easy to operate with your hands full? does it lock top and bottom? And does the latch operate both or do you have to stoop down to unlatch the bottom? Is the gate easy to scoot if the dog tries to push it? Our little Yorkie often moves the gate we have now, so we are looking for a heavier one.

Answer:
You probably do need one hand to open the gate. It is a sliding mechanism at the top only (no bottom latch). Once it is open, you can push through it with hands full and it swings back by itself to shut.

Answer:
We have found the latch quite easy to work, and I have had my hands full a time or two. There is only a top latch, but it has proved to be all that is needed. We secured the gate with screws, so I cannot accurately answer your question of scooting. I can tell you the gate is quite heavy.

Answer:
There is only a latch up top and unless you push the latch or slam it - it stays slightly open. We prefer that as we have our gate to block up staircase and since we go up and down it a lot - it helps that it doesn't latch unless we want it too. Our dog can't get through it when it's not latched - as it stays closed well enough but this way you can just use your leg to open it while you may have items in your hands.

The gate does require a free hand to operate. It has a good weight to it so two hands are better. The lock is only on the top of the gate. I have two welsh corgis and they are not able to move it. Again, it has good weight to it.

Answer:
Yes it is easy. I have an 8 week Golden and can carry him in one hand and pull the latch open with the other. The latch is only at the top and you don't need to stoop down or anything to undo it. The door swings back on it's own as well and latches. At this point we feel it is pretty sturdy because of the horizontal legs on on both sides and we haven't even connected all the pieces yet.

Answer:
Yes, it is easy to operate. It has one sliding lock on the top where you can reach down without bending (and I am 6'5"). The gate is heavy and hard to move, but the sides are angled and can be moved by the dog so he can wedge himself through if you don't anchor the sides firmly against the wall. But it is plenty heavy enough for Yorkies. We have 2.

Answer:
The gate is nice and heavy and our dog hasn't been able to move it, though to be fair, she hasn't tried very hard. It latches only at the top and requires just a finger to slide the bolt out. If you're coming from the other direction, however, you have to reach over the gate. When we come down the stairs, it's a little awkward to bend over and reach the latch. It closes easily behind you.

Answer:
The gate latches at the top only. It is very easy to open even with stuff in your hands. It is a slide type latch. This is a heavy metal gate so your Yorkie will not be able to push it open at the bottom. I have a Yorkie also. He is a jumper and climber. He can not jump over this gate or climb it. This gate is heavy so your dog will not be able to push it out of the way. It also has rubber on the bottom so it does not slide on hard wood floors easily. Also the door closes automaticlly and latches so you don't have to worry about your Yorkie pushing it open if you forget to latch it.

I find the latch very easy to open- there is only one latch at the top of the gate so no stooping required. I doubt that a Yorkie will be capable of moving this gate. It is very sturdy metal construction. We have a lab/basset hound mix puppy who currently weighs about 25 lbs.

It can't be moved, but you can flip the gate around to have it on the other side. Just be aware that the balance may be off, so it could topple over if pushed on with enough force.

No, the gate cannot go on the other side. The holes to connect the pieces of the gate make it so that you cannot change the side of the gate. The only way you can get the door on the right is to face the gate the opposite way that's in the picture.

Answer:
I have not used it at the top of stairs, but you will notice that it is very stable and would be difficult to push over. Of course, if your dog is heave or very large, they may be able to knock it over, but I've had a doberman all over mine and it never fell over.

Yes. We use it on a tile entry way to keep dogs out of stairs leading to basement.

Answer:
I would have to see your stairwell or at least know the dimensions but for the most part, this gate is just what it says it is "free standing" and it's quite sturdy. We have giant and large breed dogs (weigh 158, 110 and 85 lbs, respectively). Since the two larger dogs often "challenge" gates or simply barrel through them, we decided to turn this gate inward between our dining and living room. The gate opens "in" so they are unable to push on it - works like a charm. You'd have to be sure the gate expands past the opening at the top of your stairs but the opening between the two rooms in our house is 70" or almost 6 feet. the gate has a magnetic closure so it swings shut automatically if you let it go and latches. Hope this helps. (The gate is lovely and quite well made). Denise in Land O' Lakes

Answer:
If using it for a pet it should be fine, it is free standing and very sturdy. Not sure I would use it for a child.

Answer:
It is pretty sturdy, and it has the stand to balance it, but I don't know if someone can tip it down the stairs.

Answer:
I would NOT use at the top of stairs! It may fall! Not a suction or screw in type and could tip over.

Answer:
We installed ours on the top of some stairs and to make it very stable, I cut two blocks of wood (4" X 4" X 7" L) to slide under the legs and this made the fully opened gate extremely strong. I stained them brown to match the stairs and they are almost invisible beneath the metal legs. Even opening and closing the door is easier and can be done with one hand now.

The description states that the opening is 55" wide, so I am concerned about whether or not it could adjust smaller.

We appreciate your interest in this item. Unfortunately, the smallest size this gate can be adjusted to is 55". We do offer our 22"H Free-standing Mesh Pet Gate Barrier (item 42958) in two different size options, one of which adjusts between 40" - 70". We apologize for any inconvenience.

Answer:
The doorway where we placed the gate is less than 55 inches. We just put the side panels up against the wall on each side. The results were similar to one of the pictures on Frontgate. It shows the gate panels extended out from the doorway. It works and looks great.

Answer:
If there is wall on either or both sides of your opening, you can simply put it overlapping the doorway and the sides will come in to your wall. Otherwise, the shortest it assembles is 54 1/2"

Answer:
No. Just set it on one side of the door opening. It will be extend slightly over each side of the doorway, but will be side pieces will be flush against the wall. Look at the photo and just imagine the gate extended 3" wider on each side.

It will not be able to fit an opening 48" wide. I tested mine to see if I could make it fit, and it would not.
