34"H Expandable Free-standing Steel Mesh Pet Gate 4.6 5 394 412
Free Standing Steel Mesh Pet Gate The gate is very nice looking and an 'update' on most 'jail -type' looking pet gates. It would be helpful & convienent is the door was reversible November 4, 2013
Great purchase!!! Love the gate for our new puppy! Easy to put together and ready to use within minutes! November 5, 2013
great dog gate We have a beautiful stone house with all natural materials - wood, stone, metals, glass, granite, etc. and only high quality furniture painstakingly chosen. Therefore, we were very picky about what this dog gate would look like, and whether it would work well for us. I have been very happy with it. It looks high quality, looks attractive in the house, feels very solid, and does not require messing up the walls with screw-ins. It also accomplishes its intended purpose. A good buy. October 2, 2013
Excellent Pet Gate We have been looking for a free standing gate that our dogs are unable to push around or move themselves and we believe this is the answer to our needs. Other pet gates we've owned were not as durable and our dog (who is smarter then the average mutt) discovered how to move it making it perform poorly. One of our dogs actually chewed through the mesh the gate was made of and that required us to place chairs in front of the gate to keep them in the kitchen. We've had this gate for over a month now and everyday when we get home, the dogs are all where we left them and we did not find any surprises waiting for us to clean up. This is exactly what we were looking for. August 11, 2013
Excellent value These gates are perfect. They are handsome, classic, sturdy, and large enough to block wider walkways. I have received many compliments on them. October 28, 2013
We love this gate! This gate is great. I have 2 very small dogs and this is the only good looking gate I have found that they can not get through. It spands my 58" entryway with not problems. It is freestanding and very sturdy so no holes in the walls. The gate closes automaticly so you don't have to worry about them getting through if you are carring something in your arms. I trust this gate enough that I can leave the front door open to bring things in and out without the worry of them running out the front door. One of my dogs is a Yorky and he is a jumper and climber. Our old gate he could climb to the top but not this gate. It look great. It frees up so much space in my entryway compaired to the old gate and fencing we were using. It might seem expensive but for the look and heavy duty construction it is will worth the price. October 16, 2012
Dog fence The front gate dog metallic free standing fence is aesthetic and functional. It contains my Siberian husky (70 lbs) where she needs to be. At first she tried to push it away but the fence is solid and heavy enough to maintain its position. I am very pleased with my purchase. I was informed at all times of the shipment date. October 14, 2013
Great Gate I bought this gate for an unusual spot and it has worked very well. I am using it to block our Australian Shepherd puppy from getting into the living room from the kitchen and needed a gate that could fit diagonally between a corner of the living room and the corner of the kitchen also blocking the stairs. We were able to make one side of the gate stay at a fixed 90 degree angle, while the other side has to lay pretty flat against a wall by our back door. The puppy is very energetic and can definitely rattle the gate, but can't knock it over or jump over it. It also looks great and matches our decor. I am planning on buying another smaller matching gate to replace a plastic baby gate that we have in our hallway. I highly recommend the gate for looks and durability. April 11, 2013
Disappointed in Quality--Think Twice Purchased this gate and it does not meet Frontgates quality standards that I have grown to love. A year or so ago, I had purchased the 36-inch Freestand Pet Barrier w/ Gate and it's quality is a 5-star! I was severley let down when this product arrived as the quality of this gate has fell way short of the pet gate I had previously purchased. This Mesh Pet Gate I purchased is inferior in quality. There were gouges in the paint on every panel. There is tape residue left on the paint...yet no tape was used in the packaging. The latch barely clips into place and the slightest nudge from my dogs nose opens the gate which defeats the purpose of gate. The sliding/expandable panel is defective...the side panel does not fit into the sliding/expanadable panel--at all! This is the ONLY way for the right side to connect to maintain balance. I called the Product Specialist and mentioned that I actually thought this was a used product that was repackaged and shipped to me. The first gate I purchased (that I love!!) has not only 2 latches on the top, but it had a metal pin at the bottom so the gate door was actually secured at the top & bottom of the gate--making it very durable. In hindsight, I think I should have just payed the extra $50 and purchased the same gate that I had purchased a year ago--still holding up great, looks beautiful and sturdy today as it was when it arrived. Frontgate has offered to exchange the product within the month. I hope the replacement gate meets Frontgates quality standards or it will go back too. September 26, 2011
It works! I recently bought a house & changed the carpet to wood floors except 1 room with nice white carpet which was terribly stained. Got it cleaned & it looked like new so had to keep 2 dogs & 1 cat out. I hated putting up any barrier since it took away from the openness of the house. But after trying baby gates, furniture, etc a friend turned me onto your website. I saw this gate, read the reviews & decided to try it. It's not perfect but the closest to perfect I believe possible, & it does the job!! September 15, 2013
Pet Gate Extraordinary This pet gate was easy to assemble and beautiful in my home. It is heavy duty enough that it doesn't get knocked over when my blind 65 lb. rambunctious furball is playing chase with his brother and sister. October 15, 2013
Beautiful, as promised This gate was just as promised--as easy to assemble, as beautiful and as practical. Well worth the money October 21, 2013
34" Pet Mesh Gate - Elegant, functional This is a heavy gate which is GOOD. It looks very nice and fits the area I intended perfectly. So well, in fact that I've ordered a second one to block another wide passageway in our very open floorplan. The gate snaps closed with authority; however, it doesn't automatically latch, too much play in the gate or the bolt spring is too stiff. Anyway, it does the job and neither of my 65 lb dogs has tried to open it. The assembly instructions are hard to read, but the only thing that would have helped me is if they had noted that the end pieces are indeed different with one being for the right side and the other the left. I put it together backwards, of course, but it took only 3 minutes at most to correct once I figured out my mistatke. Very nice product, looks good in our home. February 19, 2013
Wow. Just awesome. Wow. Just wow. The quality of these things for the price is simply amazing. They actually enhance the look of a home, not make people pity you for having to live with a dog. I ordered two, and they arrived in two huge boxes and required little assembly. The shipping fee, in light of the size and weight of the package, was extremely reasonable, and they arrived sooner than promised and undamaged. They are substantial pieces. Product note (suggestion): The width of the unit adjusts by bolting the unit together at specific intervals. What I mean by that is that there are approximately four or five possible widths, not an infinite sliding adjustment. I would suggest that the manufacturer consider a sliding (infinite) adjustment feature in future models. I found a good middle-ground on the width, however. January 13, 2012
Metal Mesh Pet Gate Pros: The pet gate looks good and the color will match most decors. I ordered it because it did not require drilling or fixing to the door jams. It uses screw- adjustable hardware to fix it to the doorway jam. It is tall enough and sturdy enough to keep my 100 pound dog out of the bedroom. He was able to topple or displace other gates that were tried. Cons: The catalog states that it fits doorways of 32 1/2 inches but when I received the gate the instructions state that it fits doorways of 33 1/2 inches. The metal gate itself is 32 inches but the included hardware adds the additional width. I used only two of the adjustable knobs on one side of the gate and placed 1/4 inch rubber washers on the opposite side to decrease the width and buffer my doorway frame from being marred by the metal. Also, the gate has to be adjusted so that the latch engages. This is done by using the adjustable hardware turn knobs and by making sure the gate is level for easy in and out or it will be difficult to open or it will not stay closed. This installation process required more time and effort than it should have but I now have a pet gate that is secured and allows us to enter and exit the room. January 2, 2012
IT does not work! I purchased the barrier(not gate)..It is not level and my 5 pound puppy can push it away from the walls to leave the room she is meant to be in.. It LOOKS good, but is useless! The very first time I have been disappointed in a Frontgate product! Any suggestions??? I thought of getting some felt to glue on the bottom...(sigh).... December 22, 2011
Dog Gate I had a difficult time selecting which dog gate to purchase. I have been please with this unt. Looks good, sturdy and easy to walk thru for the humans. Super easy to set up. I would like a 34" doorway to match, but only the 42" available. September 11, 2012
Pet Gate I love this gate I have blocking my entry to the Front door, Living and Dining room. I like it so much I am thinking of blocking the entry to the kitchen as well so my dogs can't beg at my feet. Great purchase I am happy I got around to purchasing this after procrastinating for so long. December 27, 2011
Love This Pet Gate! We recently purchased the 34"H Expandable Free Standing Mesh Pet Gate because we wanted a "pass through" gate. It is BEAUTIFUL!! Love the height, I had fallen over a shorter 24" one because it was so easy to step over!! This one has you use the "door". The only thing we encountered was that the Hinge Pins did not fit!! They were so "thin" they did not fit in the end pieces! They let it wobble, move & rattle! We had to go to the hardware store and buy thicker ones that fixed the problem. My question would be why the manufacturer did not know this??? Or test it??? For the price I would have expected perfection in that area. After we fixed it, it works! Very attractive, fits in our style of home wonderfully. The hinges were the reason for only 4 stars instead of 5! December 27, 2012
Fantastic Purchase The quality of this pet gate is tremendous. The free stand legs are exactly what we needed. It fit perfect in the space are using. It is extremely durable, functional, adjustable, and beautiful. The very best pet gate we have ever purchased. Highly recommend this product! April 9, 2011
Bronze-finished Mesh Pet Gate The packaging was falling apart when we received this product. The mesh was bent. The gate is not exactly what we expected but it does serve the purpose for which we purchased it. I would be happier with the product if I paid about a third of what it cost me. December 8, 2011
Not as nice as expected I just received this gate and although it looks good from a distance the paint was scratched in numerous places and I have to lift the gate part in order to close it because it is not aligned properly. I expected more from Frontgate. August 4, 2011
Amazing Gate This gate is fantastic! It is the only gate that I have seen out there that is made of high quality metal. It looks great and is very functional. I am very glad we made this purchase!! No regrets, you will have this gate for life!!! June 10, 2011
Visually Appealing, Functional and Strong Love this pet gate! It requires minor assembly when you receive it and the instructions are clear. I had it together in 10 minutes. The design has visual appeal and functional strength. My two Yorkies became quickly accustomed to the barrier because the mesh design allows them to see to the other side. The mesh design also helps to keep small pets from getting stuck between slats in other pet gate designs. I think this is a superior product and am very pleased. The free-standing design is sturdy and makes this a mobile product. No damage to existing wall structures in the home. My order was handled, processed, and shipped in the designated timeframe. The packaging was great, so no damage in transit. Highly recommend! March 14, 2013
Very attractive This gate is very attractive but the picture is misleading. The gate is spring loaded and won't stand open by itself, so leaving it open is not an option. April 5, 2011
Love the doggie gate It is beautiful...goes well with my decor! My husband wasnt sure about having gates up everywhere for the new family addition we adopted....however when he saw the gates he was like WOW those look great! We actually ordered the 3 different styles that go together...and we are very pleased for the $ spent! September 6, 2013
Very happy Shipping took a very long time but it was worth the wait. We realized how uneven our floors were when the gate wouldn't line up and close properly. We landed up screwing the gate to the walls to even it out. Everyone comments on how nice the gate is... sturdy (even more sturdy screwed to the walls) and decorative. September 3, 2013
No More Rushing Home! Some happy to give Sophie the freedom to move around and not be in a kennel/box all day! I'm guilt-free and not having to rush home every day. Worth every penny! September 17, 2013
Great Purchase!!! Wonderful purchase! Easy to set up, well constructed, fits well with decor. Just beautiful! September 18, 2013
Great Find! The gate is very attractive and sturdy, and has done a great job of keeping our 5 dogs in their own space. September 13, 2013

gate latch

is the gate latch easy to operate with your hands full? does it lock top and bottom? And does the latch operate both or do you have to stoop down to unlatch the bottom? Is the gate easy to scoot if the dog tries to push it? Our little Yorkie often moves the gate we have now, so we are looking for a heavier one.

Answer:
You probably do need one hand to open the gate. It is a sliding mechanism at the top only (no bottom latch). Once it is open, you can push through it with hands full and it swings back by itself to shut.

Answer:
We have found the latch quite easy to work, and I have had my hands full a time or two. There is only a top latch, but it has proved to be all that is needed. We secured the gate with screws, so I cannot accurately answer your question of scooting. I can tell you the gate is quite heavy.

Answer:
The gate does require a free hand to operate. It has a good weight to it so two hands are better. The lock is only on the top of the gate. I have two welsh corgis and they are not able to move it. Again, it has good weight to it.

Answer:
Yes it is easy. I have an 8 week Golden and can carry him in one hand and pull the latch open with the other. The latch is only at the top and you don't need to stoop down or anything to undo it. The door swings back on it's own as well and latches. At this point we feel it is pretty sturdy because of the horizontal legs on on both sides and we haven't even connected all the pieces yet.

Answer:
Yes, it is easy to operate. It has one sliding lock on the top where you can reach down without bending (and I am 6'5"). The gate is heavy and hard to move, but the sides are angled and can be moved by the dog so he can wedge himself through if you don't anchor the sides firmly against the wall. But it is plenty heavy enough for Yorkies. We have 2.

Answer:
The gate is nice and heavy and our dog hasn't been able to move it, though to be fair, she hasn't tried very hard. It latches only at the top and requires just a finger to slide the bolt out. If you're coming from the other direction, however, you have to reach over the gate. When we come down the stairs, it's a little awkward to bend over and reach the latch. It closes easily behind you.

Answer:
The gate latches at the top only. It is very easy to open even with stuff in your hands. It is a slide type latch. This is a heavy metal gate so your Yorkie will not be able to push it open at the bottom. I have a Yorkie also. He is a jumper and climber. He can not jump over this gate or climb it. This gate is heavy so your dog will not be able to push it out of the way. It also has rubber on the bottom so it does not slide on hard wood floors easily. Also the door closes automaticlly and latches so you don't have to worry about your Yorkie pushing it open if you forget to latch it.

I find the latch very easy to open- there is only one latch at the top of the gate so no stooping required. I doubt that a Yorkie will be capable of moving this gate. It is very sturdy metal construction. We have a lab/basset hound mix puppy who currently weighs about 25 lbs.

Answer:
There is only a latch up top and unless you push the latch or slam it - it stays slightly open. We prefer that as we have our gate to block up staircase and since we go up and down it a lot - it helps that it doesn't latch unless we want it too. Our dog can't get through it when it's not latched - as it stays closed well enough but this way you can just use your leg to open it while you may have items in your hands.

It can't be moved, but you can flip the gate around to have it on the other side. Just be aware that the balance may be off, so it could topple over if pushed on with enough force.

Answer:
No, the gate cannot go on the other side. The holes to connect the pieces of the gate make it so that you cannot change the side of the gate. The only way you can get the door on the right is to face the gate the opposite way that's in the picture.

Answer:
Yes, my husband successfully installed the door backwards by mistake. It puts the fancy details on the other side of the screen, but still looks nice.

Answer:
No. You would have to turn the whole gate around to get the door on the Right side. Depending on your opening it could be done. The back side of the gate is not ugly. It is just not as finished as the front side.

Answer:
I have not used it at the top of stairs, but you will notice that it is very stable and would be difficult to push over. Of course, if your dog is heave or very large, they may be able to knock it over, but I've had a doberman all over mine and it never fell over.

Yes. We use it on a tile entry way to keep dogs out of stairs leading to basement.

Answer:
I would have to see your stairwell or at least know the dimensions but for the most part, this gate is just what it says it is "free standing" and it's quite sturdy. We have giant and large breed dogs (weigh 158, 110 and 85 lbs, respectively). Since the two larger dogs often "challenge" gates or simply barrel through them, we decided to turn this gate inward between our dining and living room. The gate opens "in" so they are unable to push on it - works like a charm. You'd have to be sure the gate expands past the opening at the top of your stairs but the opening between the two rooms in our house is 70" or almost 6 feet. the gate has a magnetic closure so it swings shut automatically if you let it go and latches. Hope this helps. (The gate is lovely and quite well made). Denise in Land O' Lakes

If using it for a pet it should be fine, it is free standing and very sturdy. Not sure I would use it for a child.

It is pretty sturdy, and it has the stand to balance it, but I don't know if someone can tip it down the stairs.

Answer:
I would NOT use at the top of stairs! It may fall! Not a suction or screw in type and could tip over.

Answer:
We installed ours on the top of some stairs and to make it very stable, I cut two blocks of wood (4" X 4" X 7" L) to slide under the legs and this made the fully opened gate extremely strong. I stained them brown to match the stairs and they are almost invisible beneath the metal legs. Even opening and closing the door is easier and can be done with one hand now.

The description states that the opening is 55" wide, so I am concerned about whether or not it could adjust smaller.

We appreciate your interest in this item. Unfortunately, the smallest size this gate can be adjusted to is 55". We do offer our 22"H Free-standing Mesh Pet Gate Barrier (item 42958) in two different size options, one of which adjusts between 40" - 70". We apologize for any inconvenience.

Answer:
The doorway where we placed the gate is less than 55 inches. We just put the side panels up against the wall on each side. The results were similar to one of the pictures on Frontgate. It shows the gate panels extended out from the doorway. It works and looks great.

Answer:
If there is wall on either or both sides of your opening, you can simply put it overlapping the doorway and the sides will come in to your wall. Otherwise, the shortest it assembles is 54 1/2"

Answer:
No. Just set it on one side of the door opening. It will be extend slightly over each side of the doorway, but will be side pieces will be flush against the wall. Look at the photo and just imagine the gate extended 3" wider on each side.

It will not be able to fit an opening 48" wide. I tested mine to see if I could make it fit, and it would not.
