Since it is winter we have not been able to use the umbrella yet. We set it up to see if it worked. It worked but have not used it.

Great Product!
Umbrella does exactly what it is supposed to do. It's durable and SUBSTANTIAL. One thing to point out: Some reviewers have been critical of the weight, importance of placing it in the perfect position before installing, effort required to tilt/rotate umbrella, etc. When you consider the size of the umbrella, the nature of the cantilever, and the need for absolute control and stability to the umbrella, itself (and everything around it), those areas that have been occasionally criticized are, in fact, essential characteristics to a Frontgate-quality offering of this kind.

Not the best lock system
I got this umbrella for this summer and is beutiful. Is big and give a great shade but the lock system is terrible every time we were out side and a small wind came the umbrella start in turn around never stay were we put it. Not mare how many times we unscrew it and try again never stay in place. Is really bad because we need to be putting more attention to the umbrella that any that i have before that were a lot shipper.

Great umbrella, but ...
My husband and I bought this umbrella for our remodeled patio with the idea of having it swivel to cover two areas. It is a wonderful, large umbrella, and provides great shade, but it is not very easy to swivel. You first have to bend or squat down and use both hands to unscrew a "collar" that secures the umbrella in place. Then you have to use both hands to grab the pole and wrestle it around to the desired position, and then bend down again to screw the collar back into place so the umbrella will not move when the wind blows. I am able to do it on my own, but it's not easy or convenient. We have ours placed so that we can shade either a firepit conversation area, or a dining table area and it works great when it's in place. But because we often want to change which area is shaded, and also because the sun moves requiring umbrella adjustment for optimum shade, we find ourselves going through this inconvenient process way too often. I also wonder how long it will function correctly with all the wear and tear to the collar assembly. We have been using it for about a month. So if you are looking for an umbrella to shade one area you might be really happy with this one, but if you plan to swivel much, you might look around.

Greattttt Umbrella!!
The umbrella we bought is being used for an L- Shaped outdoor sofa set we bought and this umbrella was an awesome addition to it, as it covers the are completely. The umbrella and stand are extremely well made, and we couldn't be happier with our purchase.

Spectacular Purchase
After receiving this umbrella...my husband and I agree that it is the best piece of furniture on our deck. It is not only beautiful, but it is extremely high-quality and offers a variety of easy-to-move positions. We are very happy with this purchase.

Quality Umbrella
My husband and I are very satisfied with the side-mount umbrella. It shades a good amount of space, and we turn it from our patio furniture to our dining table. We get lots of wind, so filling it with water did not work for us. We needed to fill it with sand, and then the base was very sturdy. Swinging the umbrella to different locations is easy except when you tighten the bottom too tight (hard to loosen), but for us, if it is not tightened super tight, the wind will still move the shade when it is open. When closed, the ball and socket mechanism holding the shade allows it to move with the wind. It has weathered many storms (in its closed position) this summer and has done fine. We are very happy with the purchase and are considering ordering another fabric shade because the base should last a long time.

Best Umbrella Ever!
I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I'm so glad I spent the money to buy a really quality umbrella. I've only used it for a week but it is wonderful! It's like having a gazebo that can be opened and closed.I have no doubt it will stand up to any wind we might get. I was concerned about the color because the name was a little misleading--Autumn Orange--but it's just what I wanted. It's just a touch off of brick red. I will definitely shop with Frontgate again and highly recommend this umbrella!

Great Purchase
We love our new European side-mount umbrella! The umbrella is beautiful and completely covers our patio table and chairs. Set-up was easier than expected and only took about 1/2 hour. Would recommend this to anyone!

Fair Quality
Although umbrella has some very good features you must be sure to assemble carefully otherwise umbrella can twist in a breeze if not locked in which can be dangerous. Unit is heavy. Also cover/canopy is worthless. Poor quality material. Fell apart in no time at all and only exposed to elements for 3 months during the summer

I love this umbrella!
I absolutely love this umbrella! It was easy to assemble and it is bigger than I thought it would be. Perfect shade in a summer day. Might even use it for the rainy fall days in Oregon.

Outstanding Purchase
This is an outstanding purchase. It is a stunning addition to the backyard seating area. It was very easy to assemble (two senior citizen ladies assembled). The compliments on the addition have been exceptional.

Lots of shade
As other reviewers have noted, this is a nice umbrella and less expensive than other merchants.
The suggestion below to put the sand into ziploc bags and put the bags into the base was great. We filled about 40 gallon size and 40 quart size bags with five 50-lb bags of playground sand. I'm not sure whether the bags were less than 50lbs each or the base held more than the recommended 200lbs of sand - but we filled every hole in the base just to be safe.
The center of the umbrella is about 65" from the center of the base (this was a measurement I was looking for and did not find).
The crank to operate the umbrella is 84" high off of the ground. That makes it difficult for a short person to use.
One other reviewer mentioned that the umbrella doesn't tilt. You can tilt the umbrella, but it only tilts towards the base. So if you can, put the base of the umbrella on the side where the sun hits. For example, I'd like to block the late afternoon sun so ideally I would have placed the base on the west side of my patio. Unfortunately that would block the path to the patio so I had to put the base on the north side, and there is a little part of the patio that the umbrella doesn't shade.
A final note - I could not for the life of me figure out how to put the included cover over the umbrella. There are no directions. First, the umbrella fabric portion is at least 8' from the ground. Second, it's not clear what direction the cover goes over the umbrella or how it fits over the umbrella. After a few tries I just gave up.

Beautiful and well function
I first love the look of this umbrella, but now I get to enjoy it every weekend. This umbrella is easy to operate. I wish they have made it with electrical control so I don't have to push it to turn tho.

Super constucted umbrella!
We purchased this umbrella last year (summer 2011) and just recently re-assembled it for this summer 2012 on our back patio. We couldn't be more pleased with the quality and construction and how durable it is withstanding the wind, sun, and elements. There seems to be slight fading of the fabric this year and hope it doesn't progress too fast. Other than that, we couldn't be more pleased with the purchase and feel it was well worth the $.

Umbrella- Still in Question
After looking for several months at purchasing a large side mount umbrella, we finally decided on the Frontgate one. It was a pretty big decision on our part as the European Side-mount Umbrella is not inexpensive. But, we had read all the reviews, and decided to take the plunge. We received the shipment in 2 boxes, 1 box one day, the 2nd box the next day. We lugged the two boxes down to our patio to begin the set up process. The directions were pretty clear and we were able to put together the large umbrella without much problem. It was a good thing that we had a sandy lake front next to where we were installing the umbrella because it needs sand in the bottom of the base-something I wouldn't have known about up front and would have had to stop the set up to run to the hardware store to get. Once the umbrella was set up, we soon realized that we couldn't actually tilt the umbrella side-to-side, only front to back. Had we know this, we might have faced the base a different direction, but now that it was full of sand, it was impossible to move. We tried to use the umbrella for the first time yesterday, and it was a little windy, but really HOT, so we REALLY needed the shade. Once we got the umbrella open, a gust of wind hit and it tipped backward. Luckily there was a rock wall behind the umbrella to stop it from hitting the ground, as we would have never been able to lift it back upright. I will now have to strap the base down to ensure the umbrella won't tip again like that for safety reasons.

horrible design
I purchased this umbrella and have had nothing but issues with it. The connection between the base and the umbrella is the weakest point and the most important part for the structure of the umbrella. even with the cover on (which now has a broken zipper) - the umbrella would not stop twisting in the wind. I would never buy this umbrella again!

Withstood 35 MPH winds...
We are very happy with the umbrella. It was open on a windy day and worked like a charm. As with other reviewers, I wish it had an easier way to make it swivel. I would recommend filling it with sand and water as suggested in the instructions.

A prayer for shade finally answered !
After 2 yrs of searching for an affordale way to shade my deck I discoverd this product. It is perfect in every way for what I need. My only complaint is that the cover that comes with it has a zipper that leaves a lot to be desired. It broke the first time we used the umbrella . Fortunately I purchased the optional cover when I placed my order for the umbrella. I HIGHLY recommed you do this. Very easy to assemble but it definintely takes 2 people to do.

Great umbrella is the centerpiece of deck garden
Until I installed your lovely umbrella, my large deck overlooking our lake was in full sun, and too hot to use; previous table umbrellas had been lifted off the deck by wind gusts, and were not an option for me. The 11' span gives ample shade for the 16' x 12' deck, allowing me to enjoy my breakfast and dinner under it every day; it is extremely easy to open and close, even to tilt and rotate, and I can do it alone. Since I have to move it every 2 years to have the deck washed and sealed, the sand in the base was put into multiple quart zip lock bags first; and the large round base has become a tiered green island with the addition of a pond liner protective layer, under 4 self-watering planters with perrennial Hostas. I am even growing Morning Glory vines up the arched support (with the aid of bird netting), and am adding umbrella lights under the canopy with outdoor extensions and a timer. Thank you!

You may need a ladder.First, close the umbrella canopy and move it as close as possible to the tubular arm.
Place the cover on top of the umbrella canopy (the zipper should close downward and the ties should be at the bottom)..
Move the cover down, while enclosing the umbrella and the tubular arm, close the zipper.
Tie the ties around the bottom of the cover. Click on picture below to see the cover on the umbrella.

How do you make it tilt?

A little late for this... but you need to decide first which way you want to block the sun before you place the umbrella and fill it up with the 200 lbs of sand. The umbrella only tilts one way and that is with the back to the tubular base.Extend the umbrella and open the canopy like you normally do (placing the crank handle in Socket A (upper hole), extending all the way and then in Socket B (lower hole), opening the canopy all the way.
Then to tilt it, go back to Socket A (upper hole) and using the crank handle move it counter-clockwise until you achieve the desired tilt.
