The sun sets on a long summer day, and orange and magenta begin to stain the sky. We still feel its warmth on our shoulders, but day is giving way to cool evening air. Meaning? There’s no better time for a bonfire.
For eons the bonfire has worked its magic … effortlessly drawing us into its circle of camaraderie and flickering light. Fortunately, today’s fire pits bring the fire out of the woods and cozily onto our back patios.
Fire pits come in a whole array of sizes and styles – from open, oversized copper versions that shine with every crackle and pop to convenient gas-powered tables that are ready in an instant and give off a steady warm glow.
People love the crackle of the flame, and they also love what that flame does to food. Especially marshmallows. Gooey s’mores, once a staple of childhood and the campfire, have gone upscale and unexpected. Case in point, our triple-decker gourmet version … a treat that will have your most epicurean friends asking for more.

Pizzelles are traditional Italian waffle cookies made from flour, eggs, sugar and butter or vegetable oil. They can be found in the bakery section of most supermarkets.
Store-bought Pizzelles, vanilla and chocolate
Good quality chocolate and caramel sauces (such as Ghirardelli)
Build a hot fire in a fire pit or charcoal grill, or set a gas grill to medium-high. Thread marshmallows onto metal skewers. Hold skewers above heat and toast, turning as needed, until marshmallows are puffed and golden brown.
To build each s’more, place 1 toasted marshmallow on top of 1 chocolate cookie and top with chocolate. Top with a vanilla cookie, gently pressing down to flatten. Place a second marshmallow on top, drizzle with caramel sauce and cover with a another chocolate cookie. Enjoy immediately.
