With the Hamptons long serving as America’s seaside retreat, a designer’s compass there often points seaward. And so Rachel Florez took a contemporary tack with her nautical-themed approach to the master bedroom balcony at the 2015 Hampton Designer Showhouse.
Creating an intimate exterior space ideal for morning coffee or evening sunsets, the Long Island-based designer infused modern accents and maritime flair into her design. The crisp blue-and-white palette and polished metal touches atop the wooden deck all associated with sailing, and the Ravello Daybed’s canopy approximated a ship’s sail.
The space served as an extension of the bedroom, making it a haven for carefree interludes of bliss. Florez says, “You want it to feel a little sexy,” which led her to design the balcony around the daybed. An angular sectional and rectangular planters framed the space, creating geometric accents and contemporary cool while providing a sense of sanctuary. The lightness of color made it a retreat for the senses, inviting barefoot forays and tête-à-têtes.
